Corporate Funding

How do Nonprofits tap into Corporation Funding?

Corporations donated over $20 billion in 2021.

Five types of Corporate Support:

  1. In-kind gifts are contributions by corporations of goods or services.
  2. Sponsorships are a form of advertising in which companies pay to be associated with certain nonprofit events.
  3. Cause-related marketing is a mutually beneficial collaboration designed to promote the corporation’s sales and the nonprofit’s cause.
  4. Pro bono services are when a nonprofit gets help from experts at a corporation.
  5. Workplace giving programs encourage a company’s employees to give their time and/or money to a charity by matching their efforts with dollars and other means of support.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

CRS is when corporations often take an active interest in how it affects the environment and the well-being of society. CSR includes corporate philanthropy, but also environmental issues, employee engagement, and corporate governance.

Corporations often like to support:

  • Local Nonprofits in the Community
  • Organizations or causes that their employees support
  • A Company or CEO’s favorite cause.
  • Causes that align with their business interests.

How do I find Corporate Funders?

To find corporate funders that will potentially fund your nonprofit, it is important to do your research first.  In the past, this was very time-consuming. However, in the past several years, research is now easier with new and user-friendly software packages that provide a database of corporations and grant makers.

Nonprofits can subscribe to a variety of new software databases for example:

  1. Candid Learning’s Introduction to Corporate Givingonline training is a great place to start.. .
  2. Instrumentl
  3. Others

Remember, businesses usually look to benefit from their philanthropy. So, when reaching out to potential funders, it is important to focus on the company’s interests and how your project will help them achieve their goals.

If you have a qualified and dedicated staff member to take on this role, it can be done in-house.  However, another alternative is to use a specialist in the fundraising field that has experience and can work with your nonprofit to address your particular needs.
